An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a two-week stay there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at the university – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The Iraqi student walked over to me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where anything feels possible – she declared: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his identity, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia led me to a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
