European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
